SUV Bursts into Flames at Public Elementary School

A vehicle went up in flames this morning around 9:00am at Parry Sound Public School.

The local fire crew was at the scene containing what appeared to be flames coming from the hood of an SUV. No one was injured as a result of the fire.

Fire crews told the My Parry Sound Now newsroom that the flames erupted when someone was dropping their child off for school. It is unknown what exactly caused the blaze.

Students in a classroom facing the parking lot were removed as a precaution.  The Near North District School Board issued a statement this afternoon saying, ”

In order to ensure that all students remained safe, the school was put into a hold and secure and some classes were relocated in the building as a precaution. The fire department attended and extinguished the fire. The building was declared clear and safe for re-entry. Staff and students are proceeding with the rest of their day.

Staff remained attentive to the instructional and emotional needs of students during this time. Appropriate communication has been provided to parents and guardians.

As demonstrated throughout this event, the staff of Parry Sound Public School are committed to student safety and well being. The school administration should be commended for their leadership during this event.”
