Remember the Past: Local High School Teacher shares his passion with the community

The Remembrance Project is back this year with some exciting updates.

It has grown this year and commemorates 212 local soldiers, veterans and their families.

The project was initiated by students and Parry Sound High School teacher Rick Lund.  The project was inspired by their VIMY 100 Trip. Lund saw this as an important opportunity for the Parry Sound community to honour local veterans.

The group purchased 47 new banners and banner arms this year.  The banners feature images and stories of local veterans.

The Town paid for half of them but the students had to raise the money for the other half.  Generous donations from the Waubano Shrine Club, the Rotary Club of Parry Sound and the Downtown Business Association helped to make the project a continued success.

“Every trip we try to give something back to the community. We want to encourage remembrance and that was how we did it, and we couldn’t believe the response from the community,” Lund said. Lund said the next student trip will be in May 2020 where students will acknowledge the 75th anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands by Canadian soldiers.

“Our next step will be working with the Museum on Tower Hill to catalogue information about veterans who are on the banners, to their website so that people can get more information about that specific veteran. The students are going to spearhead that project.”

Sponsors of the banners and families of veterans can order mini banners that can be made for home use. Ordering a banner can be done by getting in contact with Lund through email his [email protected].
