Seniors ask town for crossing signs near Seniors Centre

A group of senior citizens is asking town council for some safer streets.

The Parry Sound Seniors Club asked at Tuesday’s council meeting to have seniors crossing signs placed at the intersections of James Street between Mary Street and Rosetta Street following safety concerns.

Club president, Gurneth Hoddy, told the My Parry Sound Now Newsroom that some seniors have walkers and canes and cannot make it across the road fast enough to safely cross the intersections.

Similar to how students have a safe crossing sign at certain intersections, Hoddy said that their safety needs could be met by notifying the public to slow down when crossing these intersections.

“A sign would be nice…At seniors housing, there are signs that seniors will be crossing,” Hoddy mentioned. The Parry Sound Seniors Club gathers frequently at their clubhouse at 80 James St., a busy street in Parry Sound.

With the Seniors Club meeting daily, they have asked the public to consider their needs to cross intersections safely. “Seniors make up approximately fifty per cent of the Parry Sound population and are probably the most active voters in the municipal election,” Seniors Club member Allen Smith told council on Tuesday.

Two representatives from the Seniors Club presented this issue to council members. It was tabled until the next meeting on November 6th.
