Monday marks the beginningĀ of Fire Prevention Week, and this year focuses on three major points.

Local fire departments all over want people to “Look, Listen, and Learn.” That means look for places that fire could start, listen for the sound of a smoke alarm, and learn two ways out of every room.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has sponsored the prevention week for over 90 years. It says that this year’s focus is designed to educate people on basic yet essential ways to escape a home fire.

According to Stats Canada, between 2005 and 2014 structure fires declined by 26 per cent, but residential fires accounted for six of every 10 structure fires in that time.

Lorraine Carli, NFPAā€™s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy, saysĀ ā€œthese numbers show that while weā€™ve made significant progress in teaching people how to prevent fires from happening, thereā€™s still much more work to do in terms of educating the public about how to protect themselves in the event of one.ā€

Carli says that the home is the place that people are at the greatest risk, but alternatively, it is where people feel the safest. That over-confidence causes families to relax on creating and practicing an escapeĀ plan.
