MNRF declares Parry Sound 33 “under control”

It’s been just over a month, but Parry Sound 33 is now under control.

The massive forest fire first broke out on July 18th. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry declared it under control this morning.

The travel restrictions that were in place on the Key and Pickerel rivers west of Highway 69 have been lifted as well. The only travel restriction in place is within the fire’s existing perimeter, which is prohibited. The MNRF says that restriction will be in place for quite some time.

The cause of Parry Sound 33 still has yet to be determined. At its peak it was the fourth largest forest fire in Ontario, but has now slipped to fifth. It’s currently sitting at 11,362 hectares, the same size it’s been for the last 10 days. Fire crews are still working on putting out hot spots in what the MNRF calls “a coordinated and prioritized manner.”
