Police on the lookout for stolen truck that eluded capture

A police chase of a stolen pickup truck in Huntsville came up short.

Officers first tried to stop the Dodge Ram last night in the Grandview Drive and Highway 60 area.

The OPP says this truck has been involved in a number of a break and enters and thefts in the area and both the Huntsville and Almaguin Highlands detachments have been trying to find it. Officers tried to stop the truck around 6:30pm, but the OPP says the man driving fled. Police picked up his trail two more times but he continued to flee and managed to avoid arrest.

Because of a concern for public safety, the possibility the suspect may have a gun, and the way the truck was being driven, the OPP says the Emergency Response Team, the Tactics and Rescue Unit, a K-9 unit and officers from neighbouring detachments were all called to help find the suspect.

The thefts police believe are tied to this trucj include not only the pickup truck itself, which has Ontario licence plate number AF49 369, but ATVs, a utility flatbed trailer, Sea Doos, numerous other small engine type items and guns.  The OPP says the Suburban that was burnt on Hutcheson Beach Road on Sunday was confirmed to be stolen and involved in some of the thefts.

A trailer initially being towed by the pickup truck that had been taken earlier in the day had two stolen ATVs on it.  It was later found in the Hunters Bay area. The OPP is asking anyone who knows anything about this truck or its driver or who may have security footage of the chase identifying the driver to come forward. You can either call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). You can also submit your information online at this website.
