Remapping of PS 33 shows fire is bigger than believed

Parry Sound 33 is a little bigger than first thought.

The fire has been remapped, and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says it’s actually 11,185 hectares in size. That doesn’t necessarily mean the fire has gotten any bigger, just that the ministry now has a more accurate idea of its scope.

Parry Sound 33 is now the fourth largest forest fire in Ontario, moving up one spot. There are a total of 47 active forest fires in the northeast. Parry Sound 33 continues to be listed as “not under control” on the MNRF’s website. The Ministry of Transportation is still keeping an eye on the fire, as it could lead to the closure of Highway 69.

The MNRF says, however, that excellent progress has been made on the fire’s eastern side. Keep in mind that the fire, despite its name, does not pose any threat to the Town of Parry Sound itself.
