OPP warns of drug dangers as overdose suspected in Almaguin death

One person is dead and one in hospital following suspected drug overdoses in Almaguin.

The Almaguin Highlands OPP says it was called to separate overdose-related incidents on Sunday. Police say they suspect the culprit is a dark-coloured fentanyl being mixed into recreational drugs, which is tied to other overdose-related investigations in the area.

In April, the Nipissing Parry Sound Health Unit found there were less than four overdose-related visits in local emergency rooms in March. However, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit found local emergency rooms had an average of 17 visits per week for suspected drug overdoses in April.

The OPP is warning recreational drug users to never do drugs alone and always keep a naloxone kit nearby. If you or someone you know has overdosed on opioids, inject the naloxone and call 9-1-1 right away.  You can find out where to pick up your free Naloxone kit here.
