Province testing new smartphone emergency alert system in May

Emergency officials are testing a new system to warn you about serious or life-threatening events.

On May 7th, the province will test Alert Ready System on TVs, radios and your smartphone. This means your phone will emit a shrill alarm, alerting you to a dangerous emergency. This could include amber alerts, dangerous weather or impending disasters. If you have a smartphone expect to hear the alarm go off around 1:55 in the afternoon that day.

In a real emergency situation, officials say you’ll get a text message telling you what actions you need to take to protect yourself or help authorities.
