The Archipelago taking steps to avert another tragedy on HWY 69

The Archipelago is taking action to prevent another tragedy on Highway 69.

Town Council at its meeting on Friday, February 16th, directed staff to send a letter to Ontario’s Minister of Transportation demanding the province take the necessary steps to complete four-laning of the two-lane highway.

On February 6th, a collision in Shawanaga First Nation between an SUV and tractor-trailer took the lives of all the occupants of the SUV.

Though not confirmed by authorities, local media are reporting the victims were a Sault Ste. Marie family.

Ward Two Councillor Peter Frost says he has personal experience with the highway.

Earlier attempts of making the highway an extension of Highway 400 between Parry Sound and Sudbury have failed.

The roadway sits on the traditional territories of the Shawanaga, Magnetawan, and Henvey Inlet First Nations.

Council hopes the province will bring all involved parties to the table to complete the project.
