TALKS UNDERWAY TO REPLACE CHILDREN’S AID SOCIETY IN FIRST NATION COMMUNITIES

Indigenous communities in Northern Ontario could soon have their own child welfare agency.

The new agency would replace the Children’s Aid Society in the districts of Sudbury & Manitoulin and Nipissing and Parry Sound.

Talks are underway in Sudbury to have the new agency controlled by seven First Nation communities.

Nipissing First Nation Health Services psychologist Brenda Restoule says she’s hopeful the provincial government recognizes that indigenous child welfares agencies are having greater successes than current systems.

The new agency would include the First Nation communities of Magnetawan, Shawanaga, Wasauksing, Henvey Inlet, Dokis, Nipissing, and Wahnapitae.
