EQAO results for NNDSB show improvements in math

Last year’s EQAO results are in for Grade 3, 6, and 9 students across the province.

The Near North District School Board released stats for its schools earlier today, which show improvements in math results and some drops in reading and writing skills.

According to the NNDSB, there was a decrease in the percentage of Grade 3 and 6 students meeting the provincial standard for reading and writing skills across the board.

Only 59 per cent of Grade 3 students met the expected level in writing, six per cent lower than 2016, and 14 points of the Ontario average of 74 per cent.

In comparison, 72 per cent of Grade 6 students in the board met the provincial standard in writing.

Nearly two-thirds of Grade 6 students in the Near North District School Board did not meet provincial standards when it came to math. This year, 34 per cent of Grade 6 students at the board met the province’s standards. This was an increase from last year’s result of 31 per cent. The provincial average for the Grade 6 math test was 50 per cent.

There were noticeable improvements in the Grade 9 EQAO math test across the board. The Grade 9 Applied Math results improved nine per cent from last year. That means 47 per cent met provincial standards for the applied math test, which is higher than the provincial average.

The academic math results improved to 75 per cent. That’s five per cent higher than last year but still eight points lower than the provincial average.

According to the school board the improvements seen in math have to do with the province’s Renewed Math Strategy for all students in Ontario.
