Officers want cottagers to secure their property to prevent theft

With the warmer weather comes many people starting to get ready for the cottage season.  Police are advising cottage owners to make sure their property is secure to deter thieves who may be out for an easy score.  OPP Officers suggest taking valuable items home, not to keep food or liquor at the cottage, make sure all windows and doors are locked when you leave, don’t leave boats, ATVs or other vehicles out in the open unsecured, and lock up gas cans or take them home.  A good way to avoid thieves is to tell your neighbours when you are not going to be at camp, especially if you have permanent residents living close by as they should be alert to unfamiliar persons/vehicles in the area.  These are a few things that you can do when you will be away from your “piece of heaven”.  For more tips visit the crime prevention section of the OPP website. www.opp.ca
