Ice breaking resuming on Georgian Bay next week

Ice breaking operations will take place on Georgian Bay again next week.  The U-S Coast Guard cutter Neah Bay will make its way into Georgian Bay on Sunday and conduct icebreaking operations in Midland, Owen Sound, Christian Island, Killarney, Whitefish River and Bruce Mines.  It is expected that icebreaking activity near the listed communities will be carried out from this Sunday until seasonal thaw or breakout is completed.  The order in which operations are conducted may vary and operations may also be extended to other areas in Georgian Bay as required.  This winter produced unusually heavy and persistent ice conditions in the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway and Coast Guard crews and icebreakers have been working hard to keep up.  Fishermen, snowmobilers, and other recreational users are strongly encouraged to leave the ice immediately if they see an icebreaker in the area as the ice may move or break apart even from far away.
