Clement raising concerns about a cancelled OPP meeting on sexual assault report

Tony Clement isn’t happy a meeting with the OPP to look at unfounded sexual assault reports was cancelled. The Parry Sound-Muskoka MP was scheduled to meet with the police yesterday morning, but says it was cancelled just hours beforehand.

Clement says the meeting was going to take a look at the high number of sexual assault reports that were deemed unfounded by the OPP, and what action the police are going to take. He says he is disappointed and frustrated by the cancellation.

Clement says the community has to do better, and the OPP is key in making that happen.

However, OPP Staff Sergeant Peter Leon says OPP Commissioner Vince Hawkes is still making his way through thousands of cases, and it’s too early to make any official statements.

This comes after a Globe and Mail investigation showed over half of sexual assaults reported in Muskoka in the last five years never made it to court.

Leon says the police are reviewing more than 4,000 cases, and once that’s done the police will be in a better place to speak about it. He says that should be in the next few weeks.
