Distracted driving fines increase today

If police catch you driving while distracted, you will have to pay a heftier fine.  As of today, the fine is now $280 instead of $155.  The increase is a move to crack down on distracted driving.  OPP Central Media Relations Sergeant Peter Leon says the new law covers all types of distracted driving.

This also includes eating, drinking, doing your hair or makeup and even tending to kids in the back seat.  Leon says he hopes the new fine will get people thinking twice about what they’re doing behind the wheel.

The OPP launched their Distracted Driving Campaign at the beginning of March.  Leon says they are asking drivers to keep their eyes where they need to be.

The OPP is hoping the new fine will help decrease distracted driving collisions, which is now the leading cause of death on our highways.
