Outside prosecutor expected to oversee Sudbury by-election bribery scandal

A special prosecutor is expected to handle the Sudbury by-election bribe scandal that involves two high-profile Liberals.  Sudbury Liberal fundraiser, Gerry Lougheed Junior and the Premier’s former Deputy Chief of Staff, Patricia Sorbara are charged with bribery under the Ontario Elections Act.   Steve Clark, a Tory MPP from the Brockville area who pushed for an OPP investigation into the allegations of bribe, says the Liberals are doing the right thing by not having the Attorney General’s office handle the case.  Clark says instead, they want the Public Prosecution Service of Canada to name a special prosecutor.  Clark says by going to an outside prosecutor, the Liberals are avoiding the perception of bias as the case goes through the courts.

Moose News asked Clark what assurance is there that the Ontario Attorney General won’t influence the selection process and Clark said the Tories will watch for that.  A special prosecutor hasn’t been named yet.   However considering that Lougheed and Sorbara have a first court appearance November 21st in Sudbury, the appointment is expected sooner than later.   The charges against the pair involve a former Liberal candidate in Sudbury being offered a job or appointment if he gave up his candidacy so someone else could seek the nomination.  That someone else turned out to be Glenn Thibeault, the former NDP MP for Sudbury who left federal politics and is now Premier Kathleen Wynne’s energy minister.  The candidate asked to step aside, Andrew Olivier, is a quadriplegic and he records all his phone conversations.  He recorded the alleged bribes and the OPP used those recordings in their investigation.
