Driving while suspended puts a lot at stake

Police are warning drivers of the consequences of driving while suspended.  This after West Parry Sound OPP charged a 43-year-old woman with drive while under suspension and drive over the posted speed limit on Friday and a 72-year-old for drive while disqualified on Monday.  Motorists caught driving while suspended under a Provincial Offences Act could face a fine of $1,000 to $5,000 for a first offence and $2,000 to $5,000 for a subsequent offence.  If the suspension is from a Criminal Code Conviction, the fine is between $5,000 to $25,000 for a first offence and $10,000 to $50,000 for a subsequent offence within five years.  The judge could also impose up to 6 months in jail as well as an additional driver’s licence suspension for both Provincial and Criminal suspensions.  In addition, it will cost the driver $150 to have their driver’s licence reinstated by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario once the suspension is over and if the licence has been suspended for longer than a year, the driver may have to take certain tests, such as an eye test, a written knowledge test and/or a road test.  For more information about driver’s licence suspensions and fines, please visit the MTO website at http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/
