Parry Sound residents may soon be able to travel to Sudbury for PET scans

The North East LHIN has approved a pre-capital request for a permanent PET Scan Suite in Sudbury.    Health Sciences North made a request for funding to the Local Health Integration Network for the suite after the government provided $1.6 million in capital funding for a PET-CT scanner.  The hospital currently does not have the existing space for the scanner and approximately 3800 square feet of new space is required.  The approval will allow them to move forward in the planning for building the space with the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.  The expected cost for that space is $3.5 million of which $2.5 million has been raised by our community through the Northern Cancer Foundation and the efforts of the Sam Bruno Pet Scanner Committee.  Since 2010, the hospital has worked for a fixed PET-CT scanner in Sudbury which could save an average of $228,000 in yearly travel costs as estimated by the Northern Health Travel Grant Program.
