Police encourage caution in winter driving after week of snow

Police are urging drivers to take extra care behind the wheel in winter weather.  On Tuesday, West Parry Sound OPP responded to 24 vehicle collisions because of high winds and heavy snowfall.  Officers says in inclement weather to avoid travelling if possible, but if travel is necessary, it is best to inform someone of the travel route, the destination and the expected arrival time.  They also suggest preparing yourself for the trip by wearing winter clothing and carry a cell phone, top up the gas tank and windshield washer fluid, prepare your car by equipping it with proper winter tires and ensure that headlights, tail lights, wipers and defrost are working properly, and remove all ice and snow from windows.  Remember that winter weather conditions can change quickly which can place extra demands on your vehicle and your driving skills and the winter months are a particularly important time to stay focused on the road and on other vehicles.
