Flag raising motion defeat in Georgian Bay Township a misunderstanding

A motion to defeat a special event flag raising has been misunderstood.  The Committee of the Whole of Council in Georgian Bay Township voted against raising a Muskoka Pride flag this year at their meeting on Tuesday night.  In response to a number of inquiries, Mayor Larry Braid issued a statement yesterday saying that staff was directed to prepare draft policies and procedures to address protocols, and standards necessary for the raising of “Special Event” banners and flags.  The draft policies will be presented on May 12th where the Committee of the Whole will enter into further discussions regarding flag and banner etiquette.  Braid says that he has spoken to Muskoka Pride Chair Heather Hay personally, and has whole-heartedly identified that Georgian Bay Township supports Muskoka Pride’s efforts for ensuring that inclusion and diversity in the Township can be safely expressed.
