Memorial banner project in Parry Sound pays homage to Canadian Veterans

A new memorial street banner project is bringing Canadian heroes front and centre in Parry Sound.

Nearly 60 banners featuring over 100 veterans have been attached to lamp posts downtown as part of the Parry Sound Remembrance Project. Organizer and Parry Sound High School Teacher Rick Lund says last year he was looking for a way to remember a recent class trip to Vimy Ridge when inspiration struck in Muskoka.

After seeing this, Lund and his students partnered with the Town of Parry Sound, the local Legion, the Downtown Business Association and the Museum on Tower Hill to bring this project to life.

Lund says the idea was to keep the cost as low as possible to make the banners affordable for most groups in Parry Sound looking to honour a veteran.

He says once the families started getting involved the requests for banners came rolling in.

And the requests keep coming, as more families have contacted Lund interested in adding their own loved ones to these banners. Lund says while they won’t be able to create any more banners this year, there’s still plenty of empty lamp posts in town ready for next October.

Below is a map of each banner and a list of all veterans featured:
