Whalley Lake hit with Blue-Green algae

If you are heading to Whalley Lake this weekend, you may want to stay out of the water.

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit is advising people to be cautious of blue-green algae.

They say toxins from the algae can stay in the water for up to three weeks after the bloom is gone.

Officials say blue-green algae can cause skin rashes and if you swallow the toxins they can cause diarrhea or vomiting.

The Health Unit says visitors should avoid swimming and keep pets out of the water was well.

You should also avoid using lake water for cooking as boiling will not destroy the toxins.
