Backyard chickens could be coming to the Town of Parry Sound

A letter to support backyard chickens in the Town of Parry Sound has been drafted.

After a number of round table discussions with local food producers and growers, the Parry Sound and Area Food Collaborative heard that allowing backyard chickens was a popular suggestion.  Food Collaborative member Anne Stewart has a background in public health and says it would be a great way for people to save money and teach children about food.

Stewart says the idea isn’t to allow large-scale chicken farms in people’s backyards.

All of the letters received will be reviewed by the town and if there is enough support, a proposed by-law to allow backyard hens in town will be brought forth to council for approval.

The draft letter is available on the Food Collaborative’s website, but residents are also free to write their own.
