Our school board has approved its Capital Plan

The Capital Plan for the local school board has been approved.

Tuesday night, Near North District School Board Trustees approved the plan which shows areas within the Board that are experiencing enrollment growth and/or decline and background information addressing the need to right-size, comparing student spaces in existing facilities, against projected enrollment data.

For planning purposes, the board is split into five areas: North Bay, Almaguin Highlands, West Nipissing, Mattawa and Parry Sound.

The Capital Plan points out a significant under utilization at Britt and Whitestone elementary schools, Humphrey and Whitestone school buildings are in average condition, MacTier school building is in fair condition with stable enrollment, and Humphrey’s enrollment is stable.  The recommended next steps in Parry Sound are to explore partnerships for isolated schools and monitor MacTier in preparation for replacement in the future.

It also points out that nine of ten schools in Almaguin Highlands area are significantly under utilized, Almaguin Highlands, Evergreen Heights, Land of Lakes, South Shore and Sundridge school buildings are in good to average condition, and the declining population at South River is a concern.  The recommended next steps in Almaguin Highlands is to complete an accommodation review of under utilized elementary and secondary schools by reducing surplus spaces by 451 including the completion of a business case to consolidate with a new addition to accommodate JK to grade 12.
