School Board has plan to improve grade three and grade six math scores

A plan to improve grade three and grade six math scores is coming to local schools this year.

Last week, the Education Quality and Accountability Office released the scores from last year’s assessments which revealed the percentage of students in both grades who met the provincial math standard continued to decrease for both the Board and across Ontario.

In response, the Ministry of Education has a new expectation for school boards to provide daily focused mathematics instructions for students in grades one through eight during protected blocks of time.  The protected time for mathematics will allow for a more sustained period of effective instruction and assessment every day.

Just 49 per cent of grade three students in the board met the standard in 2016 compared to 53 per cent in 2013 and 52 per cent in 2014.  Only 31 per cent of grade six students met the standard in 2016 compared to 50 per cent in 2013 and 38 per cent in 2014.
