Police are reminding residents to beware of scams circulating the region

A number of scams continue to try and get money from local residents and businesses.

West Parry Sound OPP says they’ve received numerous complaints recently of a number of different scams being tried to get money from people and businesses through fraud.  Officers say to be cautious and suspicious of any unsolicited communication asking for money or that you’ve won large amounts of money.

Often, the victims are presented with a situation that is either very serious or needs immediate attention and they feel pressured to provide the information requested on the spot.  Never give out any personal, credit or banking information to anyone over the phone, by letter, email, fax or any other means of communication.

A few of the scams going around include a Canada Revenue Agency Scam, an Internet Card Scam, and a Bank Security Scam.

If you believe that someone is posing as a fraudster, hang up.  You can file a complaint through the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), or online at http://www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.  If you are a victim of a fraud or scam, contact your local police detachment at 1-888-310-1122 or you can self-report the incident at www.opp.ca/reporting.
