Seguin budget approved in principle with an effective increase of two per cent

Seguin residents are looking at a two per cent increase in municipal taxes this year.  At their meeting this week, council approved an increase in the municipal tax rate of 0.74 per cent, which, when factored in with the annual phase-in of the increased property assessment, results in an effective increase of two per cent.  Coucillor Buszynski asked if staff could look at reducing the increase down to 1.5 per cent as recommended by the finance committee because of the municipality’s track record of coming in under budget.  Councillor Hepworth thinks it should stay at two per cent to ensure a strong financial position for Seguin in the long term.  This week’s approval is only in principle to allow for staff to get started on implementing projects and there could still be changes made before it gets brought back to council for final approval in April or May.
